I don’t know what this means, but I watched like 1 episode of Black Mirror season 1 way back when, and I know enough not to like where this is going.

Yeah, it’s pretty rough to watch, but it made me think enough that my wife and I kept watching. One of those show s that I have to be very careful who I recommend it to, and give massive disclaimers.

Spoilers:

“ At the airport, her flight is cancelled and she cannot buy a seat with her current rating [look up China’s Social Credit Score...] . When Lacie causes a scene, security penalizes her by subtracting a full point for 24 hours. Because of her low rating, Lacie can only rent an older car to drive to the wedding, which she cannot recharge when it runs out of power [her old car uses and older connector, and she doesn’t have an adapte r] .”

See, I knew I knew enough to know I didn’t like where that was going.

Black Mirror, like Mr. Robot (Season 1 is all I watched ), is one of those things that’s just too terrifyingly true, and if I need terror, I can just pay attention to the world.

Also, hilarious that the character’s name is Lacie. I have a box full of cables and power supplies for hard drives, and whatever else those connectors might fit. Sometimes comes in handy.

I’ma stick with baby Yoda for now. This is the way.

I watched a lot of black mirror but the only episode I actually  liked was the online dating one/the only happy one.

It’s absolutely terrifying, because every episode feels like it’s in the very near future... Thing is, if more people watched it, and took the messages to heart, it might prevent us from ending up in the future they’re showing us.

Yes, Lacie! Haha - I still have old monitor in my attic...

I do need to get caught up on the Mandalorian. I have spoken.

I’m re-watching the whole thing (Mandalorian) while putting together a portfolio. It seems.. timely.

Re the terrifying thing— William Gibson covered all that a long time ago, long enough that it stuck. You should see No Maps For This Territory , if you haven’t.

A portfolio for a question mark— a mechanical engineer friend of mine told me yesterday he’s potentially working with a big-time client, and I have to make the case that I’m a better choice than another design firm, because we can put together a badass team (ID, EE, ME) locally.

Also, I mis-typed: it’s No Maps for These Territories . I think you can even find it on youtube.

That scene pissed me off about the future so damn much. I was like the rest of the episode being insane was perfectly fine and not weird. But running into that situation when all passenger vehicles have switched over to electric is obnoxious as hell. That shit needs to get standardized asap. Imagine needing to go to a special gas station because you have an italian car? Fuck.

I was happy though that the truck she got a hitch ride from was not electric. Rather realistic that heavy industrial trucks like that would still be run on fuel of some sort.

From the comments above, it seems you’ve already watched “Callister” — that’s the one with the Star Trek-like video game.

I haven’t watched the episode you speak of, but I read the summary you posted somewhere else. And thankfully, I never see that happening as CCS will be the dominant standard. Billions and billions of dollars and euros are being spent on building out a CCS network and fleet of cars, so anyone that buys a CCS car (German, American [sans Tesla], and other European brands) are fine. It’s Tesla and Japanese customers who are screwed. Tesla refuses to adopt CCS in the US and the Japanese are apparently going to hold onto CHAdeMO forever, even though in the US no one wants to build out that network.. Shit, VW, I mean Electrify America is only putting in CHAdeMO plugs at their stations because they’re required to under the terms of their settlement, but they only put ONE plug per site.

I mean, it’s not that complicated. Really you can buy dongles for any type and have it work anywhere in the world. Believe it or not, gas, flex fuel, and diesel quality across the world varies so for ICE cars it can be an issue as well.

I think so only because of the current CCS network being built out right now in the US and Europe. I know comparing an EV to a gas car is stupid, but cars have been built around the fuel nozzle for many decades.

Hopefully. Needs to be forward-thinking enough to handle 1000 kW charging, if that’s where we’ll end up (250 kW gets you ~ 1000 miles in an hour - 180 in 10 minutes).

Well they keep raising the capacity of CCS without changing any physical connector or anything on the cars, and they’re all backwards compatible.

The current CCS standard supports up to 350kW of charging (at 850 volts). However, last year both Porsche and BMW (part of a consortium in Germany) proved in real world testing they are capable of making vehicles that can charge ABOVE 400kW. The Porsche Cayenne they had added 62 miles of range in 3 minutes, and the BMW went from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes.

So everyone is already well on the way to 400-500 kW of charging, which is just nuts. It seems the limiting factor here is cooling which matters for battery pack life. I think that’s why Porsche is only releasing the Taycan with 270ish right now. But VW is moving rapidly with their 350 kW network of chargers.

Getting to 5-10 minutes for 60-75% of range will really be the breakover point for most people, I think.

Kinja'd!!! davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com > His Stigness
12/18/2019 at 16:13

Kinja'd!!!0

Correction (Tesla’s latest charger):

“In the real world, that translated to an impressive 286 kilometers (178 miles) in a mere 15 minutes of charging.”

We’re (seemingly) really close to 3 hours of interstate range in a 10 minute charge, but clearly, getting these fast chargers spread out everywhere will take a lot of time & money.

Kinja'd!!! His Stigness > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
12/18/2019 at 19:20

Kinja'd!!!1

I agree that 60ish percent of range in 5-10 minutes is key to mass adoption IF the network can handle that. As of right now we’re already split between stations that can do 50 kW, 100, 150, and 350.

And as you’ve said, the next thing is getting that network built out. VW is moving along at breaknet pace to get a fast network out thanks to that few billion they had to set aside thanks to CARB and the EPA. And as more cars come onto the market I think adoption of adding more fast chargers will happen as people will see a great business case for it.
